Clinical Studies on Alpha_(1)-Fetoprotein in Primary Carcinoma of the Liver

Abstract
|
|
|
Alphas-fetoprotein (AFP) test was done by double immunodiffusion method in agar gel, on 41 carinoma of the liver and 92 cases of other various conditions including 28 healthy person, 56 cases of benign diseases of the liver ,and biliary tract and 8 cases of malignant dise~ises of the stomach and pancreas admitted during; to the Department of Internal Medicine during the past 10 months from Oct. , 1971. to July, 1972. The results can be summarized as follows:
1. Among 41 cases of primary carcinoma of the liver, AFP was positive in 51.2 while it was all negative in 92 cases of other various conditions.
2. There was no relationship between AFP positivity and age and sex of the case, of ~~rimary carcinoma of the liver.
3. AFP positive reaction was more frequent in the cases who showed a pattern of chronic liver diseases by physical examination, liver chemistry and liver scanning than in those who did not.
4) All 5 cases of primary carcinoma of the liver who had bloody ascites showed of AFP positive reaction.
5) There was no relationship between the size of cold area in liver scanning and AFP positivity.
6) The grading of malignant cell by liver cytology revealed no appreciable relationship with the AFP positivity.
